First things first, turn off your water. If you know where your main valve is, shut off the water from there. If you don’t know where it is or don’t have access to it, just turn off the valve closest to the leak. This will help to reduce the amount of water flowing from your pipe and stop your water bill from skyrocketing. Once the water stops, drain your lines by turning all your faucets on until the water stops.
After you’ve shut the water off, start cleaning the standing water. It can cause severe damage to your floors, walls, and furniture. Don’t wait for us to start sopping up water with towels, a wet vac, or simply a mop and bucket. If there are windows in the room with the leak, open them up and turn on any fans you have to help dry the area out.
Next, check the electrical appliances near the water. If any of your appliances were affected by leaks, do not use them until you have them checked by a professional electrician. Electrical appliances damaged by water can cause shocks and fires, so they should not be tested by anyone who is not qualified.
Once you’ve eliminated the dangers of shocks, start moving any furniture and belongings away from the wet area. The longer things sit, the more likely they are to rot and mold. After the area is cleared, take notes and pictures. If possible, make note of how long the leak was happening before you were able to shut off the water. You will want to document any damage that occurs in case you need to submit claims to your insurance company or landlord.
