There are two basic types of water heaters; those with tanks to store water, and tankless heaters. There is a third type called a hybrid, which has a tank but uses a connected heat pump to help with heating. We can answer your questions about hybrid systems, but we will focus on conventional tank heaters and tankless heaters.

A hot water tank is common in most homes today. A tank of water is heated by electrical coils or gas flame to provide hot water to the home. If hot water use exceeds the tank’s capacity there can be a temporary loss of hot water until the tank reheats. Ryan’s Plumbing can suggest a proper tank size based on the number of people living in the home and expected hot water usage. If an electric water heater stops working the electrodes can sometimes be replaced without having to replace the entire heater — we can diagnose the problem and make recommendations.

A newer technology is a tankless system. These can be heated by either electricity or gas to provide hot water as soon as a tap is opened. A properly sized tankless system can provide endless amounts of hot water for all needs in the home. Other advantages of tankless systems include no tank of water sitting in the home that must be kept hot, and no chance for that tank to leak into the home if it fails. Tankless systems also take up much less room in the home, freeing up space for other storage. Over time a tankless system will give you lower energy costs because you are only heating the water you need and their expected life is longer than tank heaters.
