What to Do After You’ve Called for Emergency Plumbing
The plumbing in our homes and places of business is a necessary part of life. And, much like life, there are occasional mishaps and unpredictable situations that arise from time to time. In the event of being placed in a compromising situation that necessitates emergency plumbing, it’s important not to panic. And once you’ve notified them, there are a few things you should do next while you await their arrival.

Turn Off the Water
While this might seem like a rudimentary procedure, sometimes it’s easy to forget the simple steps. This is the first thing you should do. If you’re unaware of where the main shut-off valve is located, again, don’t panic. Finding the valve that is closest to the leak and turning it off will reduce the amount of water flowing through the pipes and possibly prevent further damage.
Draining the Lines
Once the water has been successfully shut off, the next step is to drain the lines of any remaining water. Running the faucets until they’re completely dry. This will make work easier for the plumbers and prevent further water damage.
Check All Electrical Appliances
It doesn’t take an expert to realize that water and electronics don’t mix well with one another. Once the water has been shut off and the lines have been drained, it’s time to check and, if possible, double-check all of your electrical appliances. Eliminating the risk of electrocution is the first preventative measure in a plumbing emergency. If you’re unsure of when it will be safe to use appliances that are close to the leak, consult an electrician.
Move Furniture
If there’s been any water in contact with your furniture, move it to a dry location at once. Furniture with too much-accumulated moisture can lead to mold, mildew, and other deterioration effects.
Document the Damages
Taking pictures of the damages caused by your plumbing emergency is imperative. Documenting exactly what happened will allow you to file an insurance claim and have evidence in your favor.
