There are few kitchen appliances that are as needed as the garbage disposal. Garbage disposals save time and money, which is why people love them so much. However, what do you do when your disposal stops working? How do you even work the disposal if you have never had one before? What to Do and What Not to Do with Garbage Disposals

When you use the garbage disposal, there are a few things to keep in mind. First, be sure that you use cold water when you turn on the disposal. Coldwater allows the disposal to operate efficiently. Also, you will need to make sure that you use the disposal regularly to keep the food moving through the disposal efficiently. Put as much food waste into your trash and recycling bins, or your compost heap. You also will want to cut up large pieces of food so that your garbage disposal will work effectively.

There are things not to do with a food processor. First, do not try and sharpen the blades of your garbage disposal. They are supposed to be dull to chop up food. Second, you will want to avoid using hot water, because although it can break up grease and fats, it will harden down the pipe later on, which will present a larger plumbing issue. Be sure that you don’t turn off the motor too early, as the disposal takes time to grind up the food. Don’t pour harsh chemicals down your disposal, because this may prevent the disposal from working properly.
