Plumbing Myths You Should Know
Plumbing issues are never fun, and sometimes completely unavoidable. However, there are many things people do that they don’t realize could wreak havoc on their pipes. Here at Ryan’s Plumbing, we know how important it is to inform and educate our customers and community, so we’re going to help debunk several myths that could end up costing you.

A major problem we run into is the effect harsh chemicals have on pipes. They’re advertised to clear out clogs so that your sinks and tubs can drain properly. While they may be cleaning out the gunk clogging the drains, they cause serious damage to your plumbing by wearing it down over time. The fumes from these chemicals are also bad to breathe in and can be hazardous to your health and anyone else residing in your home.
Next on the list is a strange way many people think they can save water. Putting a brick in your toilet back does nothing to help you save on your water bill. The brick can back your toilet up because it won’t be able to flush properly.
Another common myth is that you can wash off the grease with hot water. This just isn’t true. You should never pour grease down any pipes or flush it down a toilet. Hot grease will go down a pipe easily but as soon as it starts to cool, it will stick to the inside of pipes and can cause serious clogs. Debris can also get trapped in the oil as it starts to congeal. Pouring hot water down your drains repeatedly also damages the protective layering inside pipes which can lead to cracks and leaks.
Finally, stop putting ice down your garbage disposal! The common misconception is that if you run the disposal with ice, it will sharpen the blades. There aren’t actually any blades inside your garbage disposal at all. What can be found are impellers, or metal teeth, that spin to break down food.
