One thing that many of us take for granted is indoor plumbing. But when a pipe explodes or a sewage system gets clogged, the importance of plumbers becomes very evident. Thankfully, there is a national holiday to honor and acknowledge plumbers who prevent catastrophes and save the day when we need them the most. This holiday is called National Hug a Plumber Day, and it is being celebrated this April 25!
Indoor plumbing has come a long way since its beginning in 2700 BC in modern-day Pakistan and India, where they were made of earth and asphalt. As civilizations grew, towns became more densely populated, and diseases were spreading rapidly due to open cesspools of waste. In 1800, the introduction of underground water and sewage systems meant higher standards of sanitation and improved health for society. In 1940, lead pipes were replaced with copper ones for public health reasons, and fast forward to today, and plumbers are still creating and improving water systems so that they function like magic and keep society running smoothly.
While we realize you may not actually have a plumber in your household who you can hug on National Hug a Plumber Day, there are ways you can send a “virtual hug” to your local plumber this April 25. Did a plumber help prevent a flooding disaster in your home? Did you have an annoying leaky faucet that no one could fix but your favorite plumber? Then make sure you acknowledge them with a special note, call or a thoughtful plumbing-related gift (a spare plunger or set of gloves, perhaps?). You can also show appreciation for your local plumber this April 25 by leaving a positive online review or sharing a thoughtful message about them on your social media pages — there is nothing like word of mouth to help a business thrive!
