Why Do I Keep Running Out of Hot Water?
Plumbing issues are never fun to deal with and can be very daunting. One of the biggest issues we see is water heaters not making enough hot water. We know how frustrating that can be! From not being able to take hot showers, to doing your laundry and dishwashing in only cold water, it can cause some serious inconvenience. There are several different reasons this could happen, some of them are far simpler to fix than others. Ryan’s Plumbing is here to help you diagnose and repair any problems that are causing you to run out of hot water!

Several different issues may arise with your hot water. The first we’ll address is your hot water running out too quickly. This is typically a result of something faulty within your water heater. Normally, water heaters have two elements. The top element reheats water near the top of your tank, while the bottom element heats any water added to the tank. It should be stored at a constant temperature within the bottom tank, but when there’s an issue you’ll only have the small amount of water your top element has heated. If this is your problem, you’ll need to have the bottom water heater element replaced.
Another problem we see often is the inability to heat water to a desirable temperature. The cause of constant lukewarm water may be a broken dip tube. Dip tubes sit inside your water heater and push cold water towards the bottom so that it can be heated. If the dip tube isn’t functioning properly, cold water constantly pumps into the warm water, preventing it from getting hot. A telltale sign is if you find small pieces of plastic in your tub or sink stopper. Dip tubes can be replaced relatively easily, but it’s always advised to call in a professional if you aren’t confident.
Finally, you may be dealing with yet another issue. If your water is coming out in spurts of hot and cold, there is probably sediment built up inside your water tank. Older pipes and hard water cause inevitable buildup and sediment absorb heat from your water. To remedy this issue, try flushing and draining the tank. If this doesn’t help, it is likely time for a replacement tank.
